Before we get started on events and concerts, just a quick heads up about the greatest free show in town at this time of year. The arrival of spring will see the Castle Grounds burst into a riot of colour and beautifully designed floral displays, ideal for a quiet moment away from the bustle of the High Street.

We will begin our entertainment roundup with our near neighbours at G Live, just over the road from Mandolay, this is one of the top spots in the south of England for live music, comedy and spectacular events.

An Evening with Rick Stein on March 9th is selling fast, as is The Leaders and Lunatics Tour with John Simpson on the 18th. You know exactly what to expect from these two national treasures as they share stories from the kitchen and around the world.

The Darkness arrive at G Live on March 11th, supported by very special guests, Ash for a night of classic rock and camp banter.

The month ends with a performance from the brilliant Paul Chowdhray, described by Mail on Sunday as ‘A rare and joyous thing to see a stand up so vibrant and imperiously on top of his game’.

Our great friends at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre have another packed month of shows and performances, kicking off on the 2nd with the Guardian Breakout Comedy Act of the Year, Jazz Emu and his remarkable show, Knight Fever. Alongside his band, The Cosmique Perfectión, Jazz Emu has wowed audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe, and in London’s West End…go along and see what all the fuss is about!

In a production of Animal Farm described as an ‘Intensely physical, visceral adaptation of Orwell’s timeless classic’, by The Stage, The Octagon Theatre brings the seminal book to life in all its brilliant glory from March 11th to 15th.

The remarkable Lemn Sissay, undisputed master of the spoken word, BAFTA winning author and Sunday Times number one bestseller is in Guildford for one night only on Sunday March 16th. This show will sell out, so please book early.

The Shark is Broken tells the behind the scenes story of the making of Jaws. Starring Ian Shaw, son of the late Robert Shaw, this extraordinary account of the tensions and tempers that shook the making of Hollywood’s first blockbuster movie is not to be missed. Packed houses have greeted the show in every part of the UK, and you can see it for yourself as The Orca sails into Guildford between March 24th and 29th.

Elsewhere, let’s hear it for the Guildford Flames, our very own ice hockey team, currently enjoying another great season in the Elite Hockey Laegue. The Flames have home fixtures against Manchester on the 1st, the mighty Fife Flyers on the 8th, Belfast on the 9th, before Dundee visit us on the 16th. With the month ending versus Nottingham Panthers on the 29th.
